Homemade gifts are a great option for broke college students like me, or frugal people in general. They have much more emotional value than a gift card or new socks, and save some much-needed cash. Inspired by lists from around the blogosphere, here is CESI’s list of best homemade gifts for Holiday 2011:
Gift Baskets
Personalized gifts baskets don’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. Just put a few things in that remind you of memories with the person. For example, I gave an old friend a basket with an my old soccer ball, Twizzlers, a picture from elementary school, and few bottles of grape soda (we loved that stuff!).
Give a Skill
If you have a skill that can help your friend in some way, donate your time. I fixed my brother’s Xbox for about $8 and two hours of my time. I think he appreciated that skill more than an expensive gift. Other ideas include: wash your friend’s car, fixing something around the house, or designing a personal website.
Host a Tournament
Instead of having to give each person a gift, host a tournament and have a cash prize up for grabs. I hosted a poker tournament with a $40 cash prize and a few $10 and $5 gift cards. Instead of spending $20 per person for 8 people, I only spent $60. Just don’t forget the last-place prize!
Personalized CD”s
I made a unique playlist for a few friends with songs that bring up memories and remind me of that person. At about 10 cents a CD, this gift is very frugal and very meaningful. Since they can be easily mailed, they serve as a great option for those people you can’t see during the holidays.
Candle Jars
I know this idea might sound silly, but my Mom loves candles so this was the perfect idea for her. Custom holiday candle jars are a great frugal gift that can express your creativity and love. Check out how to make them at Family Fun.
Photo Cubes
Now these are a great idea. With a block of wood and a few pictures, you can make a meaningful gift that can be displayed for years. Grandmothers and girlfriends will eat this up. Check out The Simple Dollar for directions.
