If your holiday table is looking a little less than spectacular, change things around quickly and inexpensively with items from around your home. If you don’t have these things within reach, a quick trip to your local 99 cent store or Salvation Army will suffice. Let’s get started!
Match Real with Faux- Floral centerpieces can run upwards of a few hundred dollars—especially during the holidays. Creating your own floral centerpiece is a great way to keep more money in your pocket. Start off with items you already have and then add from there. Here are some examples that you can use to mix and match:
- Raid the 99 cent store for striking flowers. Visit your local florist and ask for individual fresh-cut flowers such as roses, that are on sale. Mixing and matching will make it look like you spent a lot on a beautiful arrangement, when in fact you paid less than a fraction of the cost. Place flowers in your favorite tall holiday vase or pewter pitcher.
- Find a used planter or urn from a thrift store or discount outlet. After fall, most garden items are on close-out and priced low. Take it home and paint it black, or your favorite color. Place a live plant in it from outdoors such as a burgundy mum or white flowering kale to create a live centerpiece.
- Hurricane Vases- Hurricane vases offer a versatile way to display your favorite winter finds! Purchase inexpensively from mass retailers like Wal-Mart, where there are a variety of sizes to choose from. Mix and match with one large vase and two smaller ones for a dramatic effect. Check out these inexpensive filler ideas for your hurricane vase:
- Layer your vase with outdoor finds. Start with pine cones and layer with acorns, twigs, and sprigs of fresh greens or red berries on the vine. Fill a hurricane vase to the brim with colorful, freshly fallen leaves. Add fresh or faux fruit to a vase, including pears, mini-gourds, persimmons, apples and pomegranates. Spray paint a cluster of small twigs in your favorite harvest or winter colors, like gold or red.
- Add a cluster of battery powered clear lights to make your vase sparkle.
- An alternative is to fill your vase halfway with water and add a colorful element of your choice, such as large cranberries, kumquats, rose petals or whole flower heads.
- Silver- Silver creates a dramatic look on a holiday table. If you can’t afford silver vases or large bowls, visit your local thrift store and look for items that catch your eye in design—forget what they are made of. Create a faux silver look with a cheap bottle of spray paint. Spray painting over a bronze color will give your vase a mercury-look—which is hot in home decor this season. Fill silver vases with your favorite items such as silk or fresh roses, tall feathers, seasonal berries, and greenery. Around the base of your vase, scatter fresh vineyard leaves—lightly spritz the leaves with glimmer paint in autumn colors of burnt orange, dark pink and deep purple for a look that stands out and adds color to the center of your table.
- Head outside to find some natural items for your table centerpiece. Keep your look simple so you can enjoy your dinner and more time with family and friends.
