Non-Extreme Couponing

coupon stack piled at

I love coupons. They save me tons; and the search is just as enjoyable as the savings.  “Extreme Couponing” is a great show, but many of us can’t afford/don’t want to spend 40 hours a week hunting for coupons.

I truly believe everyone should use coupons, and it should not take more than an hour per week to save $100 or more.  I put together a guide below to help get your reasonable, non-time consuming, non-extreme couponing.

Know what you need – now and in the future.  It’s important to stick by the old saying “buy what you need, not what you want.” However, it’s equally important to think about what you made in the future.  The best coupons expire quickly and are not available often, so taking advantage of these deals when you can is crucial.  Make a list of non-perishable items that you can always use and how many of each you have right now (laundry detergent, toothpaste, etc.).  When you come across a good deal, you can stock up for the future without over-doing it.

The more resources, the better. People usually think of coupons as either online or in the newspaper, but some of my favorite sources of coupons are not either of those.  The coupon books that fundraisers use (such as Entertainment) always have paid for themselves a few times over.  Whenever I’m interested in a new product, I call the company and express my interest, usually resulting in a coupon for a free sample.  Have fun with it: the more resources you find to get coupons, the more you’ll save.

Make a coupon website list.  You may know some of the bigger sites to find coupons, but there’s some great blogs and small sites online to find great deals.  I love using these sites and being on top of new coupons before mainstream couponers.  Here’s a few sites to get you started:

Coupon Mom

Krazy Coupon Lady

Retail Me Not

Smart Source

Hip 2 Save

Fabulessly Frugal

Go old-school. Cutting coupons from the Sunday paper is a dying art.  It might be time consuming, but it will pay off.
