We all know the bar can be an expensive place. Many of us know that with each drink, it feels easier to pull out a credit card and pretend that you’re spending Monopoly money. However, with some self-control and planning, it’s possible to have a great time at the bar without spending too much.
- Don’t open a tab. I’ve done this too many times. You hand the bartender your debit/credit card, and lose track of how much you’ve spent quickly. By paying for each drink individually, you can have an accurate count of how much you’ve spent instead of counting on memory. Use cash if possible, which is my next tip.
- Pay only with cash. Putting a strict limit on your bar budget before the night begins is a great way to keep within your means. Also, cash takes away the security risk of giving your debit/credit card to the bartender (especially if he/she keeps it for the tab).
- Don’t get drunk. Beside the obvious health and safety effects, being drunk can also damage your budget. It is well-documented that alcohol consumption reduces inhibition and memory. The more you consume, the greater the effects. Intoxication may lead to less concern about your budget, unplanned spending, and other costs such as a cab fare to get home.
- Be the D.D. (Designated Driver). If you are broke or just need to save money, offer to be the D.D. for friends. This is a great excuse to not drink (and not spend) without feeling socially awkward. Beside saving you money, you’re keeping yourself and your friends safe
- View the alcohol menu the same way you would view the shelves at a grocery store- look for the best deal on similar products; take advantage of specials; and eliminate what you don’t need.
Those are the best tips from my experiences. The bar is (in my opinion) the 2nd toughest place to be frugal next to the mall, but it is possible! I’d love to hear your stories and tips!
