I learned a long time ago not to open new credit cards for fun or buy a TV on a whim, but it’s taken much long to learn that changing my everyday small habits can lead to huge savings. My new year’s resolution was to focus on the details to save money, and it’s been a challenging but successful experience so far.
One of my biggest expenses is fast food lunches during the week. I’m always on the go, so I feel like I don’t have time for homemade lunch. $5 a day or so didn’t seem like much, but I’ve realized that’s easily over $100 or more per month that I could be saving. I’m also saving myself thousands of calories each month, which doesn’t hurt. Instead of planning to make my lunch at 6 AM and ending up too tired in the morning to do that, I make a week’s worth of lunches on Sunday evening and freeze them.
I hate how expensive gas is, but I’ve never thought about how much unnecessary driving I do. Instead of going to one store or running one errand, I wait until I have a list of three or more things to do. I’ve also toughened up with friends: Instead of being their free chauffeur, I’ve been asking them to pay for gas or alternating who drives. Being conscious of how much I drive has already saved me a tank of gas in the last 3 weeks.
The weather tends to be pretty crazy where I live, and I usually buy new clothes every season. Some of my old clothes don’t fit or are torn, but most of the new clothes I buy are just to have a new style. I’ve started trading jackets and other clothes with some of my similar-sized friends instead of wasting money at the mall. This saves me a couple hundred dollars every few months and gives me the same satisfaction as having new clothes.
These are just a few of the ways I’ve started saving. I’m looking for more! What little things have you been doing to save a ton of money?
