Latest Financial Reform

Money Weight Loss

You’ve probably seen of lot of news coverage lately about financial reform. Within the last few months there has been a lot of activity surrounding this topic. The Credit CARD act is now in affect; Unemployment extensions have been passed, and in late July the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act was signed into law. Some call this Act the most important landscape change in the history of financial reform. This law aims to protect consumers from predatory lending, deceptive practices and unscrupulous loans. As part of this new law, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has been formed to regulate consumer financial products ranging from credit cards to mortgages. Some of the areas in the financial arena that will be affected by this reform are:

- Credit cards

- Overdraft fees

- Payday loans

- Auto loans

- Student loans

- Prepaid debit cards

- Debt Collection

- Credit reports

As you can see, there are many areas where changes may be happening that can have an impact on you as a consumer. Consumers should expect more protection and oversight to the banking industry and safer lending practices. There will be refining along the way, but at least there are some “speed bumps” along the road that has been hazardous for consumers up until now. As your financial partner we strongly encourage you to read up on the changes that will be coming in the months ahead. You’ve probably heard it before, but an informed consumer is always better off than one who is not informed!

One of the best gifts that you can give yourself is continued commitment to living a debt free life. Many of the predatory practices that lawmakers are looking to reform are being targeted to those who struggle with large amounts of debt and are trying to keep their head above water financially. Without debt weighing you down you are far less likely to become the victim of unscrupulous financial practices.

We remain committed to helping you each step of the way as you journey toward a debt-free life!

A Budget Freeze Preview: State of the Union Changes for 2010

Rumors are circulating ahead of Obama’s State of the Union Address about a freeze on domestic spending. Many people question how this move will help continue the momentum the economy has made coming out of our recession. While historically government spending has helped the economy in rough times, this freeze is a little different than those which had further crippled a stale economy in the past.

No matter what your views of recent legislation and the associated spending, anyone who pays attention can clearly see that the budget deficit is getting worse. With our currency’s value plummeting, manufacturing and exports lowering, and less revenue from income tax due to unemployment the pressure has to be released somewhere. The proposed freeze would apply to domestic spending, not related to security, excluding programs designed to benefit the economy. Any new laws passed must show where their funding will come from.

Coupled with the middle-class tax incentives that are to be announced and a possible $90 billion stimulus bill, I for one will remain hopeful yet watchful. With so much at stake and so much that could go wrong there isn’t much room for error. I will be following up when more details are released – please tune in to the State of the Union Address on the 27th.

NAVIGATING THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS

Recently I wrote about the high cost of paying for college. Even as the economy has stagnated, the expenses related to sending a child through school continue to spiral upward. I gave you a link for a guide to some of the more affordable schools in the country. But what if you’re just getting the search process started? What do you do and when do you do it to make sure you’re able to get your child off to the best school for her or him? Check out the link below to collegeboard.com for a great place to start. If you’re a parent with a child thinking about college, this link could prove invaluable as you help guide your child through the process of ending up where she or he wants to be. Pay particular attention to the “More Tools” bar on the left side of the page. Click on that, and a drop down box will give you all sorts of options to link to, such as loan calculators, standardized testing preparation information, information on colleges and universities in general, financial aid and scholarship information, and even career and major guides. This is a great place for you and your child to get started and use as a guide throughout the search and application process. You could spend a lot of time surfing the web to gather all the information that you can find on this one site. Enjoy the link, and good luck helping your child find that perfect college situation.
